A single-vehicle crash on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of a 23-year-old pregnant woman from New York, as the car she was riding in struck a wall on Route 9W.

There were five people in the vehicle, including the woman’s husband, their two-year-old child, her sister, and her brother-in-law, who was driving. It was raining during the accident, and police believe that the car hydro-planed on wet pavement.

None of the other occupants in the vehicle sustained injuries. The woman was identified as a pre-school teacher in Brooklyn.

Our hearts and condolences go out to the family during this difficult and tragic time.

The Bloomberg administration released an ambitious traffic study last week, presenting New Yorkers with a wealth of statistical information on New York’s traffic accidents.

The 50-page report rejected some of the most commonly believed facts regarding traffic accidents, demonstrating that yellow taxis, trucks, and buses are involved in far fewer pedestrian accidents than private vehicles. No only that, but jaywalkers accounted for fewer pedestrian accidents than those who obeyed the traffic laws and wait for the ‘walk’ sign.

New York officials plan to re-engineer intersections and lower neighborhood speed limits in response to this data.

The study examined more than 7,000 crashes that involved the severe injury or death of a pedestrian in each of the five boroughs between 2002 and 2006. Other interesting points of data include the fact that:

*Residents 65 and older make up 12 percent of the city’s population but account for 38 percent of pedestrian deaths.

*Motorcyclists were killed at a rate 18 times that of occupants of enclosed motor vehicles

Starting Sunday August 15, a new part of the Leandra Law, which was proposed after the death of an 11-year-old girl in a drunk driving accident in October of 2009, will be put into effect.

The key element of the law will begin next week and states that anyone who is convicted of a drunk driving felony or misdemeanor will have to pay to have an interlock ignition device installed into their vehicle.

The device requires that a person blow into it before a car is turned on and if there is a certain level of alcohol on their breath, the vehicle will not start. These devices cost at least $100 to install and can be another $100 a month to maintain.

A Syracuse woman was recently awarded $1.69 million in her medical malpractice lawsuit against Community General Hospital.

Then 31-year old Tina Holstein gave birth to her third child in October 2007 at the hospital in Syracuse. After the delivery, Holstein began vomiting, so a nurse working at the hospital administered an intramuscular injection to help her.

Holstein later realized she had suffered permanent damage to her sciatic nerve, which she believes to be the result of the injection being improperly administered. A New York court found the Community General Hospital liable for her injury with total damages of $1.69 million.

Police officials believe the incident was an accident but will investigate to see if charges need to be filed.

Members of Clemens’ family believe that he probably just slipped and fell in. There were no lifeguards on duty at the pool. Clemens’ cousin jumped in when he noticed the boy, but he was too late to save him.

Reporters attempted to contact the coroner for the results of the child’s autopsy but they could be reached.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Clemens’ family and friends.
